This tool enables interactive exploration of the cross-references between two foundational indices of folklore:
- ATU: Aarne–Thompson–Uther Index of international folktale types
- TMI: Thompson Motif-Index of Folk-Literature
There are two main modes:
- Search tab: Enter keywords or IDs to find tale types (ATU) or motifs (TMI). Supports AND/OR logic and optional fuzzy search. Clicking a result loads its connections.
- Browse tab: Explore the ATU hierarchy to view associated motifs. (The TMI browser is in progress.)
Icons like indicate that a motif appears in multiple tale types. Clicking opens a modal showing other linked types, with inline back navigation.
Tooltips are sprinkled throughout—hover over options or icons for help. Feedback is welcome!
This is a prototype developed as part of the GLOS project. Feedback from folklorists and researchers is welcome.
